Originally, this system was called "the PIPE" or "the soybean rust PIPE". The network of people, information and technology was developed primarily to help soybean growers manage risks associated with Asian soybean rust, a damaging disease of soybeans first found in the USA in 2004.
We now realize that this system should also be useful in other pest management settings - for other pests of different crops. The term "IPM PIPE" refers to the umbrella system that will encompass numerous components. The first and still most important component is the SBR PIPE, which deals with soybean rust. Other components include the Soybean Aphid PIPE and the Legume PIPE for various pests of several legume (bean, peas, etc.).
Canada is already participating in putting information into and using the PIPE. Mexico is also preparing to use the PIPE to track soybean rust.
There certainly is. We are very aware of this risk. New components will be added as time, interest, and resources permit. We are determined, however, not to attempt any new development of the IPM PIPE that would jeopardize the utility and integrity of the SBR PIPE.
