How it works: Who makes the field observations?

Field observations are made by an extensive land-grant university network of agricultural cooperators. While each state's PIPE field data& collection (soybean rust, soybean aphid, legume virus components) is coordinated initially at the campus level by Extension specialists, Researchers and/or IPM coordinators; field observations statewide depend on a broad network of field specialists for each component. County and regional Extension programming efforts of Extension agents, outreach specialists, and Agricultural Experiment Station field experts enable the PIPE to run on a day to day basis. These individuals are in close contact with famer, crop consultant, and other agricultural clientele, and through this partnership deliver PIPE pest information directly from local field observation to the national IPM PIPE portal.
